Description
Gliomas are the most common malignant brain tumors with a median survival of only 15 months despite aggressive treatments. Surgery is the primary treatment for glioma, however, often fails to achieve complete removal because the glioma infiltrates surrounding tissue rather than forms a tumor with well-defined boundary. Predicting tumor evolution is very helpful for appropriate treatment as well as understanding the physiology of its growth. Students in this project are expected to develop an application to model, and more importantly, to visualize the growth of gliomas based on the reaction-diffusion equation, which is commonly used to characterize tumor growth since it captures some main features of tumor cells, as well as using some other biological mechanisms and AI-based tools.
